About this feature:

Exercises are a fact of life on any military base. Just about any event can be simulated as part of an exercise, but one type that the Air Force spends a significant amount of time is the hazardous materials spill.

Any liquid that touches the ground on base, assuming it isn't cleaned up, will eventually flow through the storm sewers into the local streams. Some of the liquids we play with on base can be bad for the environment, so practicing how to clean up after a hazmat spill is something we pay particular attention to.

These photos are from a hazmat exercise back in September of 2005. It shows our firefighters deploying equipment at a stream outside the base, preparing to skim spilled liquids off the top, mitigating any environmental or health impacts they may have.
